The Esenler district is one of the European districts of Istanbul, bordered to the south by the Sultan Gazi district, to the east by Gaziosmanpaşa, Bayrampaşa, and Zeytinburnu districts, to the west by Bağcılar and Başakşehir districts, and to the north by Güngören district. Esenler spans an area of 227.5 square kilometers and consists of 18 different neighborhoods.

Unlike some of its surrounding areas, which are more industrial in nature, Esenler is primarily known as a residential district. In 1993, as part of regional administrative changes, it was separated from the Bakırköy and Güngören districts and became an independent district.
